Is a preserved moss wall different than a living wall?
A Quiet Earth Moss Wall is a 100-percent natural product preserved with eco-friendly natural oils and natural dyes. It is not an artificial moss, made of plastic and polyester. Quiet Earth naturally preserved moss offers all the aesthetic, emotional, and cognitive benefits of a Living wall while allowing Architects and Designers to take full advantage of a luxurious assortment of shapes, textures, shades, and colors.
In comparison, Living walls are costly to install, require direct sunlight to survive, and demand regular and substantial maintenance to keep their appearance. A Quiet Earth Preserved Moss wall is virtually maintenance-free and cost-effective to install. And because Quiet Earth Moss products are naturally preserved, they do not require water or light; they can be used in rooms without daylight, like in office buildings or restaurants.
A Living wall is an interior or exterior wall covered with live tropical plants growing in soil or an alternative substrate. Interior Living walls must incorporate an integrated water delivery system because watering plants traditionally with a hose or bucket is neither practical nor effective for vertical walls. Additionally, Living Walls require regular pruning, removal of dead leaves and plants, and frequent examination for insects.
The higher cost of installing and maintaining a Living wall is why we recommend an acoustically enhanced preserved moss wall. A Quiet Earth preserved moss wall achieves the same acoustic comfort and visual appeal level as a Living wall while being much easier to maintain and more cost-effective.
How much maintenance is required?
A Quiet Earth Moss wall is virtually maintenance-free. Use a blow dryer on a "no heat" setting or compressed air to gently and carefully blow any dust off.
Preserved Moss is very durable. If not touched, the look will not change. Softness can vary slightly throughout the year due to fluctuations in humidity. The only condition where there is a potential risk is reindeer moss in arid/desert climates. A relative humidity of at least 45%-65% is recommended to keep Reindeer moss softer in the winter months. The Quiet Earth service team discusses climatic conditions with clients before finalizing your job specifications.
Quiet Earth Moss is designed as a maintenance-free product, so there is no watering required. Watering can significantly reduce the overall lifespan of any preserved moss product.
No. Due to the preservation process for Quiet Earth Moss, it is antistatic and does not attract dust.
Quiet Earth Moss is maintenance-free. It requires no watering or natural light and rarely dries out.
How can I use preserved moss in my office?
Quiet Earth Moss is intended for indoor use only. Rain, snow, and high winds will damage the moss.
Definitely! The only place that we advise against would be directly in front of a window. Too much direct sunlight will cause the moss to fade over time. It is also recommended to install your moss wall in a low-traffic area to avoid accidental physical damage.
Most Quiet Earth Moss work is 100% custom, based on specifications and design from interior designers and architects. The Quiet Earth Moss team is always available to help designers' bring their vision to life.
Preserved moss walls are great in various indoor environments, including offices, schools, healthcare facilities, hotels, and businesses. Now, more than ever, people have been reconnecting with nature during the pandemic. Quiet Earth Moss brings a calming effect to the workplace through its beautiful rich, natural texture. Made with EzoBord, its noise attenuating properties make all spaces less noisy.
Quiet Earth Moss is naturally sound-absorbing. Quiet Earth Moss panels have an acoustic absorption value starting at 0.70 NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient), which is the rate of absorption of a specific material ranging from 0, which absorbs no sound, to 1 which absorbs the sound entirely without any reverberation. Quiet Earth Moss is glued onto an EzoBord PET acoustic panel, which also helps with sound absorption.
Absorption in this range can be useful in conference rooms and classrooms to improve speech intelligibility and the quality of verbal communication by lowering the echo in a room and buffering the level of outside noise.

What is Preserved Moss?
Quiet Earth Moss is real, naturally grown moss. The plants have been preserved with natural oil and food dyes to retain the original look and feel. Quiet Earth Moss walls keep their original beauty and feel for years with little maintenance.
Yes, our moss is cultivated and harvested according to ecological best practices. It is then preserved without using chemicals by using both natural oil and natural food dyes. As the oil mimics the water in the moss, it still appears alive and can maintain a natural appearance for years to come.
Due to the preservation process that deactivates its cellular activity, preserved moss will never grow. The preservation process allows you to design walls and structures that will stand the test of time and last for years to come.
The team at Quiet Earth Moss recommends that the moss is not directly exposed to unfiltered sunlight with strong UV, which will fade the moss' color over time, and impact the texture of the moss.
Quiet Earth moss walls are non-allergenic. Our preserved moss is made without toxic or hazardous chemicals. The moss is glued to an acoustic backing board to which is also non-allergenic.
Quiet Earth Moss brings a calming effect to the workplace and will stimulate the mind so that people can continue working, boosting performance, and reducing fatigue. Nature in your space enables better focus, mental stamina, and productivity.. Made with EzoBord, its noise attenuating properties is scientifically proven to make the office space less noisy.

Insects are not attracted to preserved moss but are known to migrate into Living green walls.
The raw materials of Quiet Earth Moss walls are preserved mosses and lichens, which are sourced exclusively from suppliers that have shown a strong commitment to sustainability. The mosses and lichens pass through a preservation process comprised of natural oils and food dye, which allows them to maintain their texture, form, and flexibility for decades.
The thickness of Quiet Earth Moss ranges from ½" to 3" depending on the moss type.
Quiet Earth Moss offers a variety of preserved moss, including:
Reindeer Moss - A bushy, branched moss abundant in the Arctic and notable for its rich texture, depth of color, and nuanced shades.
Sheet Moss - Naturally grown in sheets, making it perfect as a base material for more extensive projects in office lobbies or multi-story entryways.
Mood Moss - The appearance of moss is different based on growing conditions when it was alive in nature. Adds dramatic, impactful textures and depth.
Pole Moss - Grows in a tight, round cushion-like mass and is an intense, vibrant green color. A premium and exclusive feeling moss.
Mixed Moss - A mixture of the mood, sheet, and pole moss, designed to bring in different textures and colors to create a custom installation each time.
Yes. Quiet Earth makes all of its products with 100% natural moss preserved with eco-friendly natural oils and food dye.
Calming Biophilic features have the potential to improve well-being by lowering blood pressure and improving mental health, but at the same time beautifying a space.
Lichen is grown in Norway. Quiet Earth Moss has an ISO certification for sustainable harvesting. Most of the other moss comes from Italy, France, and Spain, and we are working on the same ISO certification in each of these countries.
Lichen takes about 20 years to grow. Therefore, Quiet Earth Moss follows very specific ecological practices: we rotate the fields and come back to a patch every 20 years.
The other types of moss have a 1-3 years cycle.
How long will a preserved moss wall last?
It depends on which type of moss has been installed and in what environment.
Reindeer Moss
- When installed where no one can reach to touch it, reindeer moss will last 5+ years before needing touch-ups.
- When installed in a high-traffic areas , where people can touch it, reindeer moss will last about 1-2 years before needing touch-ups.
* The softness of moss will vary according to the relative humidity of the room. In the case of a very dry environment (below 30% humidity), reindeer moss may dry out, but you will find that it will become soft again, if placed in a room with proper relative humidity or when the relative humidity goes back to normal. A relative humidity considered as “normal” is usually between 45% and 65%. This variation is usually related to the season, dry in winter, then soft in summer. It is recommended to install moss walls in low traffic areas & out of direct sunlight. If reindeer moss is not touched, the look will not change.
Sheet, Mood, & Pole Moss (anything but reindeer moss)
- When installed where no one can reach to touch it, these types of preserved moss will last 8+ years before needing touch-ups.
- When installed in a public place, where people can touch it, these types of moss will last 3+ years before needing touch-ups.

The method designated as CAN/ULC-S102-10, "Standard Method of Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials and Assemblies," is designed to determine the relative surface burning characteristics of materials under specific test conditions. After testing three identical specimens, results confirmed that our reindeer moss panels have an average Flame Spread Rating (FSR) of 95 and an average Smoke Developed Classification (SDC) of 445.
What is biophilic design?
Biophilia is humanity's innate need to connect with nature and the natural environment. Green walls, natural materials, and plants are just some of the ways to bring the natural environment into your interior spaces. Please read our blog to find out much more about biophilia, biophilic design, and the benefits of integrating nature into your workplace.
Biophilic design elements create a positive response by replicating the natural stimuli people experience while outdoors. Biophilic design has been scientifically proven to have a positive impact on mental health.
Now that most people are returning to work after the pandemic, employers want to find unique & productive ways to create a more comfortable work environment. Quiet Earth Moss also absorbs sound, for a more peaceful workplace.
How much does a preserved moss wall cost?
The price of a moss wall will differ depending on the design and size. For more pricing information, please contact your local client services team.
How is a moss wall installed?
No, moss walls are incredibly lightweight for their size, especially compared to the same sized living wall. Since they do not require irrigation, you do not have to compensate for the additional weight from retained water.
The short answer is nearly anywhere, but not everywhere:
- You should not install a moss wall in a high traffic area.
- You should not install a moss wall up in a dry area. Moss walls require a minimum level of humidity to look good, about 40 to 50 percent.
- You should not install a moss wall near heating or air conditioning vents. The blasts of hot or cold dry air will ruin it over time
- You cannot install a moss wall where it might get wet (near running water, faucets, sinks, fountains, etc.).
- You cannot install a moss wall outside.
Only reindeer moss tends to dry out in the winter months but softens back up in the summer months. It really depends on the humidity levels of your space where the moss wall is being installed, usually in regions where humidity falls below 30%. If reindeer moss is not touched, the look will not change. Install moss walls in low traffic areas.
